Written by:

  1. Tell me about yourself – tell a cohesive story as you walk through your resume. Highlight relevant skills, experience and awards. Always end your story by explaining how you are a good fit for the role you are being interviewed for.

Example:

“I started my journey as a medical receptionist with Ashdown Medical Center in 2021. I managed all front desk duties autonomously and reported to the off-site practice manager regularly. I enjoyed the role because it was challenging and allowed me to cultivate my problem solving and time-management skills. After 3 years in that role, I believe it is now time for a new challenge and your organisation is offering just that. One of the main tasks for this role is managing digital marketing and I have a growing interest in that aspect of health administration.”

  1. How did you find out about this role? – it is important to be honest about how you found the role because this feedback is essential for the recruiters hiring process. End your response by stating why you applied for the role.

Example:

“I found this role advertised on SEEK. I only apply for roles where I meet 90% or more of the selection criteria and this was one such role. I then read up on the organisation’s current work and was pleased to find out that your values align well with my own.

  1. Why did you apply for the role with this company specifically?

Example:

“When I found the role advertised on SEEK, I did some research into the organisation and was pleased to find good reviews from previous employees. The vision of the organisation is in line with my personal vision and values. I truly believe I would be a good fit.

  1. What are some of your professional strengths?- This is your time to sell yourself, do not sell yourself short. Make sure that your responses are in line with the skills required for this role.

Example:

“I am highly organized and complete my work with little to no supervision. I love being part of a team and I always aim to form strong interpersonal relationships with my colleagues and other stakeholders. From my experience, time management is a crucial skill for this role. It is a skill that I am proud to have perfected over the years in similar roles.”

  1. What are your career plans in the foreseeable future? Do not be afraid to share your aspirations. Recruiters are looking for talented individuals who will make an impact long-term.

Example:

“Professional development, continued career progression and stability are important to me. I am currently taking a course in digital marketing because I have always had an interest in widely sharing medical services that are available to the community. In the foreseeable future, I would like to spearhead health programs that make a difference to multiple communities.”

  1. If a patient refuses to pay the consultation fee after seeing the GP, what would you do? Situational questions may come up during your interview. This is a chance to show that you understand the role and what is required of you. Always fall back on policy if you are unsure of how to answer the question.

Example:

“I would politely reiterate the billing policy for the organization and explain why it is important for them to adhere to it. If they are unable to personally pay, I would ask that they call someone so I can take payment over the phone.”

  1. Which personal identifiers do you use to confirm a patient’s identity over the phone? This is a question used to test basic knowledge about the role. You have to confirm a patient’s details even if you are familiar with the patient. Keeping information such as contact number and address updated is a vital part of the role.

Response:

“Name, Date Of Birth, contact number and address.

  1. Do you have any questions for me? Do not be afraid to ask questions. Interviews are a two-way process and as much as you might be desperate to get a job, you need to make sure it’s the right job for you.

Examples:

“What does a regular day look like as a Medical Receptionist at <insert organisation’s name>?”

“Are there opportunities for continued training and career progression?”

“How will my performance be reviewed? I value feedback and am always looking to improve my work”

“What do you like the most about working here?”
